BOTOX Cosmetic®: A Quick Primer
Chances are that you’ve probably heard of BOTOX Cosmetic® at some point, but you may not know what it actually is or does. Basically, BOTOX Cosmetic® is actually the brand name for a type of toxin called Onabotulinum toxin type A
that is produced by a special kind of bacteria. In small amounts, this toxin can be used to treat various health issues.
While the toxin had been studied and used by people as early as a millennium ago, it wasn’t until 1989 that the toxin would make its debut as the product we know today as BOTOX Cosmetic®.
Today, BOTOX Cosmetic® is an internationally-known smoothing treatment that has helped millions of people meet their health and beauty goals. Currently, most people associate BOTOX Cosmetic® with aesthetic goals like temporarily reducing facial lines and wrinkles. However, BOTOX® can be used for some common health issues, including the following:
- Excessive Sweating (Hyperhidrosis)
- Chronic Migraines
- Muscle Spasms
Even today, more uses are being discovered for BOTOX®. BOTOX® is primed to be a mainstay in the cosmetic and therapeutic industries for many years to come.
Combining BOTOX Cosmetic® and Dermal Fillers
BOTOX Cosmetic® is fantastic to use on its own, but did you know that it works well with dermal fillers as well? It’s not uncommon for BOTOX Cosmetic® to be used in tandem with fillers like JUVEDERM®, and for good reason.
First, BOTOX Cosmetic® is often used to soften fine lines and wrinkles over areas of expression such as frown lines, forehead lines, and crow’s feet for a more positive and refreshed appearance. Dermal fillers are often used to correct areas of volume loss, sagging, and hollowing to lift, shape, and contour areas of the face. This means that using BOTOX and dermal fillers together can reduce both fine lines and wrinkles and improve the shape and contour of the face. Both treatments have minimal recovery time and results are noticeable right away with fillers, and within two weeks for Botox® Cosmetic.

So BOTOX Cosmetic® and dermal fillers like JUVEDERM® go very well together, but what other combinations might you add?
BOTOX & Coolsculpting™
You may be surprised to learn that BOTOX and Coolsculpting™, the revolutionary body contouring tool, are often used together. In case you haven’t heard of Coolsculpting™ before, it is a body contouring technology that uses cryolipolysis or “fat freezing” to safely perform spot reductions. Since fat is much more susceptible to cold temperatures than other types of tissue, the fat can be targeted while leaving other types of tissue unharmed.
Specifically, the company that created Coolsculpting also has a product called CoolMini™ that is designed to target the neck and chin areas. This product can be used in tandem with BOTOX to shape facial contours and achieve the desired look.
BOTOX & Chemical Peels
BOTOX is also great alongside chemical peels, and can even be administered on the same day for some people. Lighter chemical peels can often be used with BOTOX, whereas heavier chemical peels should generally be used a few days after the BOTOX treatment. While BOTOX addresses wrinkles and fine lines, chemical peels can be used to address pigment and skin texture problems.

Lastly, BOTOX can be used next to laser treatments like PICO Genesis™. PICO Genesis is a laser procedure that is used primarily for hyperpigmentation and melasma. PICOGenesis is fantastic for bringing balance and radiance to your skin, and can easily work alongside the wrinkle-erasing properties of BOTOX.
