Stretch Marks

Stretch marks are also known as Striae or Striae distensae (lines). They’re a darker-hue scar on the skin, which can fade into thin white lines but won’t disappear completely. They occur during pregnancy, puberty, and growth, or rapid weight gain. Stretch marks most commonly occur where larger amounts of fat are stored.

How Stretch Marks Form

Stretch marks develop when our skin stretches over a short time frame, usually related to accelerated growth during puberty, or weight gain during pregnancy.  This abrupt change will cause the collagen and elastin to rupture in the dermal layers of the skin, and as the skin heals, stretch marks will appear.

The most common places where stretch marks are formed include:

  • Abdomen
  • Breasts
  • Upper arms
  • Underarms
  • Back
  • Inner and outer thighs
  • Hips
  • buttocks
